FOOD FARMING SYSTEMS
GROW BAGSThese are low-cost reusable polyester felt bags, similar to those that many people use to grow tomatoes on their deck or porch. In this application, the bags are filled with the local dirt to grow crops in areas experiencing severe hunger issues.
World Hunger Team is making a difference. We help villages grow their food. We give them a “Grow Kit.”
Grow Bags facilitate the growing of crops in places that would not ordinarily support a garden. These could be alongside houses or schools, it could be in a clearing behind their church. The point is, our system grows food in diverse places – so new sources of food can be brought ‘on line’ to grow healthy food for people who greatly need it. GROW TENTThis is an indoor hydroponic growing tent designed for the specific purpose of growing greens and small-bush vegetables. It has a very small “footprint” of just 40” wide by 40” deep, by 80” tall. It uses non-circulating hydroponics (Kratky Method) to grow crops in standing (non-aerated) water. The crops are “fed” with water-soluble all-mineral nutrients, resulting in 100% organic crops.
Our Grow Tent is ideal for growing a wide range of leafy crops including lettuce, spinach, kale, Swiss Chard, arugula and more. It also makes it extremely easy to grow your own fresh herbs such as basil, chives, oregano, parsley, dill, lavender and more. What makes our unit unique is that it has 3 levels, each level growing a whopping 36 individual plants – with an amazing 108 plants growing all at one time! We believe that our unit is the HIGHEST YIELDING GROW TENT available today. This makes it ideal for “juicers” and those who wish to eat healthy home-grown foods daily. MUSHROOMSOur Grow Tent can also be configured to grow large volumes of mushrooms indoors. With three open areas of 26-1/2 inches, up to 8 large bags can be hunger per shelf area, for a massive 24 growing bags. Each bag can produce up to 5 lbs. of mushrooms per week, so it’s easy to see that this can be a powerful and high-volume source of nutrition.

USES FOR GROW TENTSWe believe the time is right for people across America to begin growing their own food again, for better health as well as better food security.
We foresee K-12 schools getting the children involved in growing food, and serving it in their cafeteria. We see churches growing food in unused classrooms, to deliver to seniors in their “Meals on Wheels” programs. Because anyone of ANY age can grow food in our Grow Tent, we see senior organizations growing food in their activity centers to unite their members around a shared love of gardening (without the back-breaking work!) And yes, we see people from all walks of life growing fresh greens , herbs, veggies and mushrooms in their homes to share with their friends and families, year-round. As such, we are seeking donors who wish to sponsor one of our units in their church or other institution, to help feed the needy in your area. |
LOST CROPS OF AFRICA TEST FARMWorld Hunger Team has partnered with Robert Bitera and his Living Hope ministry to purchase 6 acres of extremely-fertile land in Uganda. 3 are paid in full; 3 we need funds desperately to keep.
We are calling this the “Lost Crops of Africa” Research Farm. That is because the goal of the facility is to test rare and heirloom seed varieties from all across Africa. |

WHY ARE THEY LOST?
For 100s if not 1000s of years, people in Africa ate a wide range of local crops. Some came from trees, some were root based, some were greens and herbs, and some were vegetables and fruits. They were extremely healthy and delicious, by all accounts.
In 1894, Uganda becamse a protectorate of the British Empire. They took over the farms and forced the largely exclusive growing of corn, rice and wheat. Why did they choose to grow these non-native crops instead of the healthy native stuff they were ALREADY GROWING?
As you might guess, it revolved around profit. Rice, corn and wheat were in high demand back home. All three were easily grown, easily processed and easily packaged in very high quantities. And the resulting pallets of food were packed aboard freighters bound for almost every port in the world.
So as you can imagine, the people representing ‘the Empire’ in Uganda – the people profiting from this enterprise – weren’t exacly concerned about nutrition. They craved the profits from an easy and proven set of products, and the money and societal status those profits gave to them.

DID PEOPLE NOT LIKE THEM?
Actually, they LOVED them! These were the foods of their forefathers, the foods of their culture. But since corn, rice and wheat were the only foods provided to them, they learned to survive. They created some very good recipes and cooking techniques, and soon those dishes became the cultural heritage of the country.
But there was a price to pay. In very short order, the health of the people WAS seriously affected! Doctors saw a huge increase in the number of patients with issues such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. And that led to an increased demand for the foods of the past – the all-natural organic greens and vegetables that proved to be far healthier than corn, rice and wheat.

CAN THEY STILL BE GROWN?
The only ‘saving grace’ in this story is that when the British colonization ended in 1962, many small farmers switched back to growing the ‘old crops.’ So seeds are still available, and these crops can easily be grown and re-introduced into the marketplace.
But what of the survival rate? If a farmer is confident he or she can make money growing rice, corn and wheat, why take a risk on an unproven crop?
That is where WHT comes in. This fall, we are testing a wide range of seeds from “The Lost Crops of Africa” at our farm in Uganda. Our goal is to pick the best varieties for propagation. We will grow large quantities of the top crops and let them go to seed. Then we will package and distribute those seeds across Uganda and eventually all of Africa.
The result? High-volume localized availability of some of the healthiest organic greens and vegetables ever grown on planet earth.

WHY THEY’RE IN HIGH DEMAND
The “Lost Crops” are still revered and craved by people all over Uganda. These are the foods of their culture, and they would greatly like to have them available everywhere once again.
Ugandans – particularly Ugandan’s health-conscious youth – are seeking the healthier foods of their father’s generation and before. They greatly desire to eat healthier foods, and they will reward the shop owners who can obtain high-quality crops from a reliable local source with an eye on maximizing quality, taste and nutritional value.
